NOTICE: WATER TEMPS ARE INCREASING. FISH EARLY, BEFORE WATER TEMPS EXCEED 68°F.
It is hot out, and it looks like we are going to be in peak summer conditions for much of the extended forecast. On the bright side, we still have a lot of good fishing opportunities. This time of year you will find the best fishing if you go up in elevation and if you get an early start. Much of the water in the lower sections of the rivers around Pinedale is pretty warm after the heat of the last few days and will likely remain that way until we start seeing cooler nights again. Remember that the mortality rate for released fish goes way up once the water temperature reaches about 68 degrees. Now is a great time to start thinking about taking those summer fishing trips up into the abundant water throughout the Winds.

Green River
The upper sections of the Green are really fishing right now. The cooler nights up higher and the decent water levels have been really good for this area. Look for fish in deeper pockets and along slow edges. In faster current, a dry dropper in the early morning has produced a lot of fish, and headhunting in areas with more moderate flow has been good later in the morning. Keep an eye on water temperatures in the section around Daniel and lower. Big foam bugs are still working good as well as caddis, drakes, PMDs, and Yellow Sallies.

New Fork River
The New Fork has been fishing a bit slower lately. Below the East Fork, water temperatures are a real issue right now. The water on the upper sections is a bit cooler but temperatures are probably still an issue in the afternoon. The water has a bit of a tannic color so streamers early might be a good option. We are still seeing plenty of surface activity with lots of caddis and drakes around.

Extreme heat and persistent low water conditions below Fontenelle have been tough on this area. Fishing closer to the dam is ideal for better water temperatures, and ending your day early will help reduce the mortality rate of the fish in this area. Remember to keep your fights as short as possible, especially with larger fish to reduce the stress on the fish in these conditions. Look for fish to have moved into the riffles and quicker water looking for cooler and more oxygenated areas. PMDs, sow bugs, and crayfish are all good patterns to consider right now.
