Outlook

What a great time we are having right now. The weather is fantastic, the fall colors are incredible, and watching a tank move on a streamer in clear water is one of the best visual experiences in fishing. We are locked in on our fall fishing tactics and seeing some big fish make some aggressive moves. Looks like we have a pretty nice weekend ahead of us and it should be a great time to be out on the water. Recently we have seen a big shift to streamers and nymphs, but there are still some risers out there too. If you swing by the shop, make sure and ask our shop associates about Barney's Ice Cream for a special fly offer.

Flies to try

F.K.A.P, Retriever Jig, Anatomical BWO

The Green is low but still in really good condition. The upper sections have been really good for wade fishing recently. Getting nymphs or jig streamers down into the deeper pockets has been the best method for finding fish. The sections around Daniel have fished well with both nymphs and streamers, and we are still seeing some bug activity during the warmest part of the day with a few fish rising during BWO hatches. The lower sections have been blown out off and on with the decent amount of precipitation we have been getting, but when the water conditions have been good, fishing has also been good. Getting down in the deep holes has produced the most fish.

Flies to try

Barely Legal, Sparkle Flag, Chili Pepper

The New Fork is fishing pretty well right now. The streamer fishing has picked up and will hopefully continue to get better in October. Nymphing is also working well, and we are seeing decent BWO and Trico activity as well as the occasional Callibaetis and Mahogany. We have heard reports of some redds along the river and one Brown Trout sitting on a redd. These are probably Kokanee redds, but please avoid scraping your boat over them or wading through them, and it is probably time to watch out for Browns pairing up in shallower spawning areas. We have had good success with fish sitting in the deeper holes, along seams, and in structure.

Flies to try

Pill Popper, Brain Damage, Hot Head Bugger

This is a fun time of year to fish below Fontenelle. The Kokanee spawn, followed by the Brown Trout spawn, creates a lot of activity in the area. Please avoid redds and actively spawning fish, and remember that from the dam to the cable crossing at Weeping Rock is closed to fishing starting October 1st. Nymphing and streamer fishing is the name of the game, with hot head flies being an excellent choice. Look for trout to set up behind spawning Kokanee and along seams and drops.
