Outlook
Well, folks, we've almost made it through another winter here in Pinedale. In just a few short weeks, Two Rivers Fishing Company will be open for the season! Our first rowing school of the season kicks off April 26th. May seats have filled up, but we still have a few spots open for the April course, so if you're looking to learn the oars, claim your spot before it fills up!
Although we had a seemingly lackluster start to the winter regarding snowpack, it really picked up pace in February. A very wet late winter has given us plenty of snow for a healthy runoff this spring. The first two weeks of March were great, with lots of snow in the mountains and more to come in the forecast. Most of the sections of the Green and New Fork Rivers in the immediate Pinedale area are still iced over, but it is opening up and should be mostly fishable by the beginning of April.
Most sections of the Green are still very much locked up with ice, but the sections near Daniel all the way up to Warren Bridge have some potential of being fishable in the near future. The Green below Fontenelle is open and accessible. Float and wade fishing are both productive means this time of year, with most action coming from subsurface methods. Small to medium streamers, midges and sowbugs are likely the best options.
The story is very similar on the New Fork as the Green, with most river sections low and covered in ice. However, there is sporadic wading access throughout. The streamer fishing has already proven to be decent, with expectations of improved conditions as we near spring.
The Bighorn through Thermopolis has been fishing well, with most of the activity coming from baetis nymphs. Decent BWO hatches are happening most days, but slightly windy days have kept them off the water. The water is cold, so the fish are sluggish, and streamer fishing hasn't quite heated up yet. The Bighorn will likely see excellent spring fishing very soon!
