Outlook

If you like big browns on streamers and worms, now is a great time to be in Pinedale! The water is very high right now but is trending steadily, with the upper reaches of the Green and New Fork Rivers staying clear enough for fish to actually see their dinner. Wade fishing is certainly challenging, but plenty of fishable water is within reach from the banks. With the rivers out of their banks, there is a lot of food in the water, and the fish are eating!

Green River

Flies to try

Goldie, Sparkle Worm, Wooly Bugger

The Green has very low visibility in its southern reaches, but anything above Daniel has about 2 feet. Fish have been mostly eating worms, and large stone flies under the surface, but lots of larger fish are responding to small to medium streamers.

New Fork River

CFS

Flies to try

Epoxy-back Stone, Depth Charge Worm, Jig Prince Nymph

Boulder Creek and the East Fork are quite muddy, so beware of the New Fork near Big Piney. However, Pole Creek and Pine Creek are coming in relatively clean, so the water close to town is very fishable. Similarly to the Green, most of the fish are eating worms and larger nymphs, but not as much streamer success.

Flies to try

Magma Mysis, Ray Charles, BH Sow Bug

There is still lots of water coming from Fontenelle Dam, but it’s still relatively clear. Soft inside bends and slower pools will likely be where fish congregate. Scuds and midges are the primary food source, but there have been whispers of dry fly fishing in recent days.

Flies to try

Warrior Perdigon, Dungeon, BWO Emerger

The Big Horn has seen a recent uptick in flows, and we expect a bit more soon, but the river has stayed relatively clear. Rain in the forecast is likely to cause a bump in flows, but lately, streamers and nymphs have been doing the job well, and a small change shouldn’t hurt that.
