Outlook

It’s almost go-time here in Pinedale and the surrounding area with more bug activity by the day, and peak runoff likely behind us. The water is still up, but in most areas, is dropping relatively quickly and cleaning up. Fontenelle Dam has, however, opened and is on the rise, and the Bighorn is high but heading down as well.

The Green River south of Daniel is still very dirty but is dropping significantly with this cold snap. Anything above Daniel Fish Hatchery is in better shape and is fishing well. We are still seeing and hearing reports of large stonefly activity, and mid-day dry dropper rigs could get it done in some areas.

The New Fork is dropping quickly, but most of it is still off-color. However, it is also prime time worm fishing. The clarity is just right and the water is at a great level for lots of terrestrial food to be flushed into the system. There have been some early signs of Drake activity as well so we are almost in dry fly season!

The Green Below Fontenelle is rising quickly with the first big flush of the season. Fontenelle reservoir filled up, and they are finally sending some of it toward Utah. Wade fishing is likely to increase in difficulty—but in a boat—subsurface nymph and streamer fishing techniques can still be quite productive.

Flies to try

PMD Parachute, Small Sow Bugs, Micro-Dungeon

The Bighorn River near Thermopolis has been high and the fish have been more difficult to find, but it has finally begun to drop. Expect fish to hit nymphs and streamers in the shoulders of the day, but the warm temps should cause some mid-day hatches.
