Outlook

Conditions have held up really well around Pinedale, and there is still a little snow up high, so we are encouraged by what we have seen so far. We do have some heat in the forecast, so it will be interesting to see what happens to the remainder of the snow in the mountains. We've seen a little bump in flow the last couple of days but expect the water to begin to drop again by the weekend. It is time to start thinking about water temperature and watching to see if the water is getting above 65 degrees. Consider starting and ending your fishing day earlier, and keep an eye on water temps in the afternoon, especially in areas with slower flow. Bug activity has definitely been starting earlier in the day even higher up, and dry fly fishing has remained good. Here in the shop, we have seen a pretty good dent in our fly selection recently but still have decent stock for now, so swing by and stock up because the selection will probably get a bit thin as the month goes on.

Water Walker, Missing Link, Spanish Bullet

The Green has fished well top to bottom recently with some reports of sizable fish caught on dries throughout the system. The upper sections have a lot of bugs right now with some spots still in decent shape for floating. Wade fishing has been good in the upper sections but still a bit high to wade everything with confidence. The upper sections are still where we have seen the largest variety of bugs, including multiple types of stones, mayflies, and caddis. Make sure you have a good variety of bugs with you to properly match the hatch. Look for fish in the protected water along the edges. The lower sections are still in good shape for floating and tossing big foam and drakes.

Flies to try

Chubby Chernobyl, Hare's Ear Parachute, Circus Peanut

The New Fork has come down quite a bit and will likely continue to do so. Keep a close eye on water temperature as the flow continues to slow. Fish are still eating stones and drakes. Look for fish to move more into the riffles and buckets as the water drops. Consider big bugs with red or purple in them if things slow down with Golden Stone patterns.

Half Dun, Sow Bug, Micro Frank

Flows have remained low below Fontenelle Dam, but fishing has still been productive. Big foam bugs, caddis, and PMDs are all good options for topwater fishing. Nymphing with sow bugs and mayfly nymphs has still been productive too. Try fishing in the faster water to find the cooler water and avoid the moss. Avoid fishing slow water and long fights with fish as temperatures approach 100 degrees in the area this weekend.
