NOTICE: MONITOR WATER TEMPERATURES

Drake season is slowly coming to an end, but we are seeing caddis, flying ants and beetles, Calibaetis, yellow sallies and more, so the fun has just begun. The hottest temps are likely behind us, with afternoon clouds most days and cooler nights. Fish are sitting in the middle of the water column for most of the day, so even when there isn’t an active hatch, they’re likely to still eat on the surface.

The Green from Daniel and up has been fishing well during the drake hatches, and the ants and caddis we are seeing on607ly serve to extend productive dry fly fishing into the later parts of the day. Some yellow sallies have been seen as well but we aren’t quite there yet. During the sunniest times of the day, try a dropper below some big foam.

The New Fork has been fishing well, especially in the morning. The upper reaches still have some drake activity, but we are gradually switching to small terrestrials and sallies. Lots of nice fish are sitting under cut-banks, so try to hug the grass and make long drifts.

The Green below Fontenelle has been fishing well lately with quite a bit of big foam action. Chubby Chernobyls and Peanuts have been incredibly productive, with smaller mayfly patterns making appearances as well. The classics will get it done when they don’t want to play on top, like scuds and midges.

Fish are eagerly eating on the surface for a good portion of the morning, especially with healthy Trico hatches. They can also be tempted with larger foam patterns with droppers. The flush from earlier in the month really woke up the fishery and took care of a bit of the moss problem, so the Bighorn should be on your list!
