Outlook

NOTICE: WATER TEMPS ARE INCREASING. FISH EARLY, BEFORE WATER TEMPS EXCEED 68°F.

We have been so fortunate this year that water levels have remained as good as they have. Water conditions have been decent since the heat wave we had earlier this month broke. The bit of cloud cover and moisture that we have received has helped conditions as well. Keep in mind that daytime highs are still consistently in the 80s, so it's best to stick with the early days as afternoon water temps are still a concern in many lower sections of the rivers. The forecast is calling for some rain, which could potentially blow out some tributaries for a short time, so keep that in mind if you intend to fish smaller streams or lower sections this weekend. Keep those streamers handy for when conditions are cloudy and if you come across some water with a bit of tint to it. Here in the shop, we are pretty excited about our current conditions as we head into August. We have good guide availability next month, and we think that we will see some truly excellent wade conditions, so if you are looking for a really cool end-of-summer guided trip, give us a shout.

Flies to try

The Green has been everything we could ask for this summer. Water level has been good, water temperatures have held up for the most part, the bugs are there, the fish are there, but it has gotten pretty technical in a lot of places. These conditions might be a bit tough for some people, but remember, the hard is what makes it great. Fish long leaders and keep the drag out of those drifts, and you will likely find some success. Be quick to change flies too if you get a rejection. The upper sections of the river still have a good amount of water and bug activity. We are seeing a couple drakes still, PMDs, Callibaetis, Yellow Sallies, and caddis. Dry droppers and terrestrials have also been a good option in pocket water. The lower sections below where the New Fork comes in have seen some dirty water from recent rains, and the water temps are holding on for much of the day, so this may be a good option for a streamer day right now.

Flies to try

Micro Chubby, Half Dun, X-Caddis

The New Fork has still been a bit slower because of the warmer conditions. We have seen a couple of small bumps in the flows from the recent rains, but water levels are still trending down. The upper sections are the best option for fishing the New Fork right now, but you are likely to see high water temperatures from mid-day on. Look for fish sitting in buckets with some nice flow above. We are seeing drakes, PMDs, and caddis. Smaller foam flies are also a good option along deeper cut banks.

Heisenberg, Sparkle Dun, Flyweight Scud

Not much has changed below Fontenelle. Flows have remained consistently low, and it's pretty hot down there. Fish early and look for fish holding in faster water. I have heard reports of a couple large fish on streamers recently, so that is certainly worth a shot early or if there is some cloud cover. PMDs and caddis are going to be good topwater options. Sow bugs, midges, and crayfish are all going to be productive subsurface options.
