Outlook

Long, hot days of summer are here, and as per usual, the bugs follow suit. Drakes are still covering most low-mid reaches of the Green and New Fork Rivers, and sporadic hatches of stones and other mayflies are still happening. The Green below Fontenelle finally dropped to a productive level, and the Bighorn, while still high, is slowly dropping.

The Green is still fishing well near Daniel and Warren Bridge, with drakes and a few salmon flies still popping up. The upper Green is still cold, but it’s slowly improving with caddis and a few large mayflies beginning to hatch.

Flies to try

Adams Superfly, Circus Peanut, F.K.A. Prince

Drakes are hatching with intense prolificity, especially in the mornings and evenings, with a great spinner fall just before dark. Mid-day, a nymph or worm dropper has proven very productive when the sun is high and the sky is blue.

Finally, the Green below Fontenelle is dropping and dropping fast. It’s wadable and fishing well. Nymphs, streamers, and the occasional dry-dropper rig should get it done with the fish finally in easily feedable water.

Bighorn River

CFS

Flies to try

Ebony, Bangtail, Beldar

The Bighorn is still very high, but all signs point toward a gradual decline in CFS over the course of the rest of the month. The full-sink streamer fishing is likely the best bet for drumming up some interest from large trout, especially with the clarity improving.
