Outlook

It's really nice to see the temperatures starting to trend lower and feel the crispness in the air in the morning. These factors have certainly had a positive impact on water temperatures in the area, and right on time too as we have seen a decrease in flows recently. We are really happy with how the flow held up in July, but knew there would be a drop eventually and it appears we have reached that stage. On the plus side, the drop in flow really opens up the wade fishing opportunities and consolidates the fish into really predictable spots on the river. It looks like we are going to see another small warming trend going into the weekend, but then the temperatures will continue to trend down, and I think we can expect to see some really enjoyable conditions as the month progresses. Here in the shop, we have started our end of summer markdowns, so swing by and check out some of the deals we have right now. Also, we still have pretty good guide availability for the remainder of summer and into fall, so come and fish with us during what is probably the most underrated time of year.

The upper Green continues to do the heavy lifting in the area. Water temperatures have remained good in many of the sections in this area. We have seen water temperatures occasionally reach 67 degrees but only on a couple of occasions late in the afternoon and early evening. We do encourage anglers to carry a thermometer and check water temps occasionally even on the upper sections of the Green right now while we are still seeing daily highs in the 80s. We are definitely seeing a decline in those summer hatches and are transitioning more and more to dry dropper and terrestrials. Down lower on the river, water temps have been good throughout the morning, and we have seen some smaller bug hatches like midges and tricos.

The cool nights recently seem to be helping the New Fork a bit. We have still been giving the water below the East Fork a rest, but water temps in the upper section have been decent in the morning. That being said, we encourage people fishing the New Fork to watch water temps closely as noon approaches and into the afternoon. Dry dropper and tricos have been our top choices, but with the water color the way it is and the cool mornings, streamers are certainly worth a shot early. Also, make sure you have some hoppers with you if you are fishing near areas where hay cutting is happening.

Not much has changed below Fontenelle. Flows have stayed the same and temperatures are still pretty warm. Water will be cooler the closer you get to the dam, and water temperatures are likely too warm still down in the refuge. Sow bug and mayfly nymphs are going to produce the best, but there are still dry fly opportunities with hopper and other big foam as well as midges and tricos. Streamer fishing should also continue to improve as the weather shifts.
