Outlook

This weather makes it feel like fall, but the dry fly fishing has us clinging to summer just a little bit longer. There are still plenty of active hatches around and lots of fish eating on the surface, and it seems as though the worst of the hot temperatures is behind us. Our bird season is also creeping up, so get your cast and blast trip in the books before it’s too late!

The Green River has begun to fish better everywhere with the dropping of overnight temperatures and daily afternoon cloud cover. Most of the topwater fishing has been by using small to medium terrestrials such as beetles, ants and hoppers. The occasional dropper is also a viable option for increasing productivity.

Parachute Trico, Bionic Ant, Bank Robber Sculpin

The New Fork has also seen a rise in fish activity with the same weather patterns as the Green River, so expect a similar quality of surface fishing. Lots of fish are eating tricos as well, especially in the lower reaches of the river, with terrestrials and even some streamers mixed in.

The Green below Fontenelle has been fishing well amidst a growing algae bloom down low. Typical for this time of year, although not as severe, moss and algae plague subsurface fishermen, so dries and dry-droppers are the easiest. Light streamer fishing with floating line will also turn some heads and may pick up less vegetation.

The Bighorn River near Thermopolis has been fishing well with a plethora of different flies and methods working well. Tricos and PMDs have been hatching sporadically while nymph and streamer fishing fills the gaps.
