Outlook
August is a sneaky good month for fishing here in Pinedale, and this August has been no exception to that. We've started the month a bit warmer than we would like, but the cool nights have really helped and the extended forecast looks great. With the cool nights and lower daytime highs coming up this weekend and into next week, I expect that we will have good water temps in most places and be able to fish the whole day with cool water. We still encourage everyone to check the water temperatures throughout the day, but I think conditions are going to be mostly in our favor going forward. I wouldn't recommend giving up dawn patrol just yet because the fish have been very active first thing, but afternoon and evening floats should be back on the table pretty soon. I call August a sneaky good month because this time of year, I hear a lot of comments about low water and not seeing any fish rising, and I think those two factors often get associated with unfavorable conditions, which I think is a misguided sentiment. Lower water conditions here are excellent for wade fishing and still really good for float fishing in a lot of spots. When the water is low, the fish are consolidated into certain areas, and it makes it easier to find them, so shots at fish often go up in these conditions. While it is absolutely true that we do not see near as many risers as the month goes on, that does not mean the fish have stopped looking up. Fishing terrestrials and foam bugs are still producing a ton of top water eats, so don't give up on dries just because you don't see as much surface activity. With the cloudy weather coming up later this week and into the weekend, make sure you have those streamer rods ready for action. Here in the shop we just got an awesome new streamer called the Brain Damage, tied by our very own Eric Oram. I've seen this fly in action, and it's one you should always have in your box, so swing by and pick some up.

Recent Reports
Green River
Much of the Green is fishing really good right now. The flows have dropped a lot recently, which has made for really great wading conditions on the upper sections. Dry droppers have been working really well in the upper sections and there are still plenty of opportunities to fish smaller dries such as midges, tricos, caddis, and ants. The lower sections have still been a bit too warm in the afternoons, but are really close to being in good condition. Look for fish near the riffles and on the transitions into deeper water.

New Fork River
With the recent warmer days, we are still commonly seeing water temps that are too warm a little later in the afternoon throughout the system. Fishing in the morning has been pretty good on the upper sections, but water temps at the East Fork confluence have still been pretty warm. Lots of tricos in the upper section and dry droppers are still a great option. Streamer fishing has picked up a bit recently and should get better with the cloudy weather coming up. Look for fish sitting in deeper spots with some flow and in holes with some structure.

Get your streamers out this weekend. The Green below Fontenelle is great for streamer fishing when there is cloud cover. Fishing has stayed pretty consistent down in this section. You can find some surface action with small bugs such as BWOs and tricos as well as some larger foam bugs. Sow bugs, small mayfly nymphs, and crayfish are great subsurface options. I've heard rumor that they are sending some water down from Fremont Lake to Fontenelle Reservoir, so fingers crossed we may see a flush coming up to get rid of some of the moss down there.
